A few more entries from my cartoon journal:
This is from the day that someone who did not know how to handle their motorhome almost tipped themselves over in the ditch by the dump station...

Justin and I spray painted arrows onto the road in the wagon wheel. It was almost 90 out and sweat was dripping into my glasses:(

My dad and Claire and I went on a bike ride and he strapped pepper plants to his bike and kept turning around and asking if the plants were ok... very dorky

Jordan, Shannon, Shannon and I went geocaching, and discovered we were covered in ticks, then made my mom comb through my hair. Thankfully she did not find any...

Hill House process and completion!

This one was taken via cell phone, so I apologize for the bad quality... but I decided to put in another hill in the background and experimented with layering pencil over ink, which I kind of like. The ink adds the structure and the pencil softens it up a little.

And here is the finished product:) I haven't used pencils in a long time. I think I like inkwash a little better, but that might be because I'm more accustomed to using it. This was fun for little change. My intentions were to make a place that is serene and safe and quiet. It looks like a lovely place to sleep with a cool summer breeze coming in through the window, the sounds of waves and maybe a little rumble of thunder in the distance.

Claire and I went to the Cranbrook Thesis show. It was hard to tell which art was supposed to be interactive and which wasn't. We really wanted to sit on this pouf thing, but we didn't because we were afraid we weren't supposed to...

Claire and I went to play club euchre with our grandma after a long bike ride. Of course, she beat us both rather badly...

We got a new flat iron and my loving mother and sister absolutely insisted on straightening my hair... I don't think the end result is worth the time it takes...

Cartoons

When I write letters to Joe in the army, I sometimes illustrate them:) Here are a couple of my cartoons:
(I've been writing on neon colored paper lately... sorry for the color haha.)



I found this amazing youtube channel -> http://www.youtube.com/user/LDsongscreen#g/p that has tons of old folk songs on it and the lyrics scroll down the screen with the guitar chords next to them. I think I played for over an hour with Lew last night. His voice is a little deep for my register, so I was singing all the harmony parts. Lovely way to spend an evening.

(The lyrics are from M*A*S*H's version of "Gee but I want to go home" from the My Darling Clementine episode- I was very happy when I found the chords...)



I recently rediscovered my Talking Mother Goose! She used to read me bedtime stories when my parents got tired of reading book after book:) My cousin Chad and I told my poor sister that she talked because there's a ghost trapped inside of her and now Claire is terrified of talking toys ha! Here is a conversation between Claire and I:

Me: I dug out Mother Goose and put batteries in her. She looks like you punched her in the mouth. Her top beak is a bit askew from the bottom...
Claire: It's because she couldn't quite swallow the last kid she ate...
Me: HA!
Claire: It's the truth! She should be buried.

After I am done listening to all my tapes and books I think I'm going to go place her lovingly in Claire's bedroom in a spot that it looks like she's watching her bed:)




I recently bought a few records from the thrift store and among them is one of Strauss Waltzes, which I love! I couldn't help conducting with a pencil and dancing in my seat while I whistled along. Makes working a little more enjoyable:)

Here is a little more done on my house picture. I'm still debating whether to put more hills or water in the background. I'm pretty sure there will be dark moody clouds eventually. And I'm going to soften the grass up with layers of pencil. I like the contrast between the soft pencil and the ink though... I might have to do more like this

Cemetery Sketches and Process

More from Oaklawn Cemetery in Algonac. I biked there thinking I would be smart and go sketch before the mosquitoes start coming out. It's very shady there, so they're really horrible in the summer... Instead i got attacked by teeny tiny flying things:( So I didn't stay super long...

This is a drawing I'm starting for fun. I thought it might be interesting to document my process. I know I don't want to have hard edges on the house, but I'm debating between doing it in graphite or very bright colored ink washes. I think the background is going to be water, but it could turn out to be hills... We'll see.

Autorama and Motor City casino

I still have a lot more cars, but I'm not quite done touching them up yet...

Joe and I went to the casino first, so while he was playing roulette, I sketched people. Casinos are awesome places to sketch people because everyone is so intent on their games no one notices (however, when they do notice that you are staring at them from behind a sketchbook they become EXTREMELY paranoid and suspicious...lol)

In stark contrast, there was no being inconspicuous at Autorama. Every time I started drawing someone approached me wanting to know my entire artistic background and to look through my sketchbook, which was pretty obnoxious, I must say... Sometimes I like talking to people when I'm out sketching, but most of the time I just like to do my thing and not have people staring over my shoulder...

Red Wings game

I went to my first game last weekend and took my sketchbook in case I got bored. Apparently it is sacrilegious to get bored at a hockey game though, but I sketched a few people anyways during halftime (Claire made fun of me when I called it half time...).

I tried to sketch some of the players extremely unsuccessfully. They just move around too fast and I don't go that fast... so I just sketched unsuspecting spectators like a creeper.
